Officer No. 140, Sargent D. DiIulio on June 18, 1998. The Autopsy was performed and certified

by Shaku Teas, M.D., Forensic Pathologist, 1123 Ashland, River Forest Illinois 60305, Tel:

708-366-4389. Brust Funeral Home Lombard. I am requesting an Investigation Surrounding the

Medical Murder of Mr. Roberto Hung Mustelier who was a Lombard Victim of Heinous Hate

Crimes in the State of Illinois, USA.

My name is Gardenia C. Hung, eldest daughter of Mr. Roberto Hung Mustelier, Juris Doctor,

deceased Lombard resident homeowner, taxpayer, and U.S. citizen in York Township, DuPage

County. Mr. Roberto Hung Mustelier is an Illinois Victim of Heinous Hate Crimes who was

abused, throttled, and murdered by Respiratory Ben Aguilar while Roberto Hung was asleep as

an intensive care patient at Vencor Northlake Hospital under the medical supervision of Dr.

Raied Abdullah, Dr. Grodzin and other physicians, nurses, and medical staff. I, Gardenia C.

502 South Westmore-Meyers Road and Washington Boulevard in York Township, Du Page

County, Illinois 60148-3028 USA. Therefore, I, Gardenia C. Hung have incurred Extraordinary

Healthcare Expenses, Funeral Autopsy, Church and Crematory Expenses, Home Care Expenses,

Pharmaceutical Expenses, and Legal Court Financial Expenses at the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit

Court in DuPage County, Caretaker Expenses for Mr. Roberto Hung Mustelier, my Father who

has been a Lombard Victim of Heinous Hate Crimes since he purchased two (2) homes, one by

St. Pius X Catholic Church and School, and the other by Sacred Heart Catholic Church and

School, in the Village of Lombard,York Township, DuPage County, Illinois.

For the record, the Northlake Police Department has the Investigation Report No. 98-1392,

dated June 18, 1998, at 8H50 for Reporting Officer Michael Brletich, Police No. 140, Sargent D.

DiIulio on file to document and support that Mr. Roberto Hung was found bleeding around

tracheotomy tube on the neck area under suspicious circumstances after the daughter Gardenia

Hung found him in bed, unconscious, and already dead around 7:00 A.M.

State of Illinois reports have been filed on record documenting complaints against Vencor

Northlake Hospital abuses of patients, overbilling, and medical fraud by healthcare staff and the

investigation by the Cook County Proviso Senior Citizen Community Human Services

Department was also submitted. In addition, the U.S. Social Security Administration was

notified for abuses of Medicare/Medicaid overbilling medical services at Vencor Northlake

Hospital.

Brust Funeral Home and Shaku Teas, M.D. Forensic Pathologist performed the Autopsy and

found that Mr. Roberto Hung suffered and died from severe bleeding and internal damages to the

respiratory tract, lungs, and puncture to his heart which caused his death under medical care of

Dr. Grodzin and Dr. Raied Abdullah at Vencor Northlake Hospital in Cook County, Illinois.

Mr. Roberto Hung was a Traumatic Brain Injury Patient who was injured from a severe and

blunt hit to the head at his Lombard home on December 22, 1996, after he returned home from

working at The Pampered Chef in Addison and Dominick’s Food Stores in Oakbrook Terrace.

Mr. Roberto Hung has been an Illinois Victim of Heinous Hate Crimes who was hospitalized at

St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Edwards

Hospital, Manor Care Nursing Home, Marianjoy Rehabilitation Community Center, Elmhurst

Memorial Hospital, Vencor Northlake Hospital in Northlake, Illinois. Mr. Roberto Hung was

fully insured by Medicare/Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, The Principal Financial Group,

Physicians’ Mutual, COBRA, etc.

Since I, Gardenia C. Hung, have incurred Extraordinary Expenses on behalf of Mr. Roberto

Hung and I am currently experiencing Financial Hardship as a Lombard Victim of Heinous Hate

Crimes, on behalf of Mr. Roberto Hung Mustelier; Therefore, I Do Hereby Appeal The Denial

of Application for Financial Assistance on legal grounds under the Constitution of the State of

Illinois, Article I, Bill of Rights, Section 8.1 for Crime Victims’ Rights, Section 12 Right To

Remedy and Justice and the National Victims’ Constitutional Amendment for Illinois

Enforceable Victims’ Rights Act pleading for Illinois Crime Victims Compensation for

Truth, Proclamation and Authenticity of Life in the Digital Age

June 5, 2011

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On the occasion of the 45th World Day of Social Communications, I would like to share some reflections that are motivated by a phenomenon characteristic of our age: the emergence of the internet as a network for communication. It is an ever more commonly held opinion that, just as the Industrial Revolution in its day brought about a profound transformation in society by the modifications it introduced into the cycles of production and the lives of workers, so today the radical changes taking place in communications are guiding significant cultural and social developments. The new technologies are not only changing the way we communicate, but communication itself, so much so that it could be said that we are living through a period of vast cultural transformation. This means of spreading information and knowledge is giving birth to a new way of learning and thinking, with unprecedented opportunities for establishing relationships and building fellowship.

New horizons are now open that were until recently unimaginable; they stir our wonder at the possibilities offered by these new media and, at the same time, urgently demand a serious reflection on the significance of communication in the digital age. This is particularly evident when we are confronted with the extraordinary potential of the internet and the complexity of its uses. As with every other fruit of human ingenuity, the new communications technologies must be placed at the service of the integral good of the individual and of the whole of humanity. If used wisely, they can contribute to the satisfaction of the desire for meaning, truth and unity which remain the most profound aspirations of each human being.

In the digital world, transmitting information increasingly means making it known within a social network where knowledge is shared in the context of personal exchanges. The clear distinction between the producer and consumer of information is relativized and communication appears not only as an exchange of data, but also as a form of sharing. This dynamic has contributed to a new appreciation of communication itself, which is seen first of all as dialogue, exchange, solidarity and the creation of positive relations. On the other hand, this is contrasted with the limits typical of digital communication: the one-sidedness of the interaction, the tendency to communicate only some parts of one’s interior world, the risk of constructing a false image of oneself, which can become a form of self-indulgence.

Young people in particular are experiencing this change in communication, with all the anxieties, challenges and creativity typical of those open with enthusiasm and curiosity to new experiences in life. Their ever greater involvement in the public digital forum, created by the so-called social networks, helps to establish new forms of interpersonal relations, influences self-awareness and therefore inevitably poses questions not only of how to act properly, but also about the authenticity of one’s own being. Entering cyberspace can be a sign of an authentic search for personal encounters with others, provided that attention is paid to avoiding dangers such as enclosing oneself in a sort of parallel existence, or excessive exposure to the virtual world. In the search for sharing, for “friends”, there is the challenge to be authentic and faithful, and not give in to the illusion of constructing an artificial public profile for oneself.

The new technologies allow people to meet each other beyond the confines of space and of their own culture, creating in this way an entirely new world of potential friendships. This is a great opportunity, but it also requires greater attention to and awareness of possible risks. Who is my “neighbour” in this new world? Does the danger exist that we may be less present to those whom we encounter in our everyday life? Is there is a risk of being more distracted because our attention is fragmented and absorbed in a world “other” than the one in which we live? Do we have time to reflect critically on our choices and to foster human relationships which are truly deep and lasting? It is important always to remember that virtual contact cannot and must not take the place of direct human contact with people at every level of our lives.

In the digital age too, everyone is confronted by the need for authenticity and reflection. Besides, the dynamic inherent in the social networks demonstrates that a person is always involved in what he or she communicates. When people exchange information, they are already sharing themselves, their view of the world, their hopes, their ideals. It follows that there exists a Christian way of being present in the digital world: this takes the form of a communication which is honest and open, responsible and respectful of others. To proclaim the Gospel through the new media means not only to insert expressly religious content into different media platforms, but also to witness consistently, in one’s own digital profile and in the way one communicates choices, preferences and judgements that are fully consistent with the Gospel, even when it is not spoken of specifically. Furthermore, it is also true in the digital world that a message cannot be proclaimed without a consistent witness on the part of the one who proclaims it. In these new circumstances and with these new forms of expression, Christian are once again called to offer a response to anyone who asks for a reason for the hope that is within them (cf. 1 Pet 3:15).

The task of witnessing to the Gospel in the digital era calls for everyone to be particularly attentive to the aspects of that message which can challenge some of the ways of thinking typical of the web. First of all, we must be aware that the truth which we long to share does not derive its worth from its “popularity” or from the amount of attention it receives. We must make it known in its integrity, instead of seeking to make it acceptable or diluting it. It must become daily nourishment and not a fleeting attraction. The truth of the Gospel is not something to be consumed or used superficially; rather it is a gift that calls for a free response. Even when it is proclaimed in the virtual space of the web, the Gospel demands to be incarnated in the real world and linked to the real faces of our brothers and sisters, those with whom we share our daily lives. Direct human relations always remain fundamental for the transmission of the faith!

I would like then to invite Christians, confidently and with an informed and responsible creativity, to join the network of relationships which the digital era has made possible. This is not simply to satisfy the desire to be present, but because this network is an integral part of human life. The web is contributing to the development of new and more complex intellectual and spiritual horizons, new forms of shared awareness. In this field too we are called to proclaim our faith that Christ is God, the Saviour of humanity and of history, the one in whom all things find their fulfilment (cf. Eph 1:10). The proclamation of the Gospel requires a communication which is at once respectful and sensitive, which stimulates the heart and moves the conscience; one which reflects the example of the risen Jesus when he joined the disciples on the way to Emmaus (cf. Lk 24:13-35). By his approach to them, his dialogue with them, his way of gently drawing forth what was in their heart, they were led gradually to an understanding of the mystery.

In the final analysis, the truth of Christ is the full and authentic response to that human desire for relationship, communion and meaning which is reflected in the immense popularity of social networks. Believers who bear witness to their most profound convictions greatly help prevent the web from becoming an instrument which depersonalizes people, attempts to manipulate them emotionally or allows those who are powerful to monopolize the opinions of others. On the contrary, believers encourage everyone to keep alive the eternal human questions which testify to our desire for transcendence and our longing for authentic forms of life, truly worthy of being lived. It is precisely this uniquely human spiritual yearning which inspires our quest for truth and for communion and which impels us to communicate with integrity and honesty.

I invite young people above all to make good use of their presence in the digital world. I repeat my invitation to them for the next World Youth Day in Madrid, where the new technologies are contributing greatly to the preparations. Through the intercession of their patron Saint Francis de Sales, I pray that God may grant communications workers the capacity always to carry out their work conscientiously and professionally. To all, I willingly impart my Apostolic Blessing.

Cuban President Raul Castro has attended the inauguration of the first new Catholic building on the communist island in more than half a century.

Mr Castro joined priests, including Vatican officials, at a new seminary outside of the capital, Havana.

Ties between the Roman Catholic Church and state soured in the aftermath of the 1959 Cuban revolution.

Relations have eased in recent years and Church officials recently helped to broker the release of 52 dissidents.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church in Cuba, Cardinal Jaime Ortega, had warm words for Mr Castro and his brother Fidel during the opening of the new San Carlos and San Ambrosio seminary on Wednesday.

"In the name of the Church, I thank both the former president, as well as current President Raul Castro, who honours us with his presence, for the state's support of this work," Cardinal Ortega said.

The inauguration was also attended by senior Vatican officials and a group of bishops from the US, including Thomas Wenski, the Archbishop of Miami, which is the centre of the Cuban exile community.

Papal visit

The new seminary, where students will be trained for the priesthood, is a symbol of just how far Church-state relations have improved in recent years, says the BBC's Michael Voss in Havana.

Raul Castro turned to the Church to broker a deal over dissidents The original seminary was taken over by the Cuban authorities in 1966 and men wanting to become priests were forced to study at an old building in Havana.

After the 1959 revolution, many priests left Cuba and Fidel Castro declared the island an atheist state, although diplomatic ties with the Vatican were never severed.

The major turning point in relations came in 1998 when Pope John Paul II was permitted to visit Cuba.

Earlier this year, President Raul Castro, facing growing international pressure, turned to the Catholic Church to help arrange the release of 52 political prisoners.

Under the agreement, the government promised to free - by 8 November - 52 political prisoners imprisoned in 2003 after a crackdown on opposition activists, government critics and commentators.

So far, 39 have flown to Spain, along with members of their families. However, seven of the 13 dissidents still in prison have rejected the Church deal because they do not want to leave Cuba.

Cubans get set to mark patron saint's anniversary

Preparations are beginning to honor the 50th anniversary of a historic celebration in Miami of Cuba's patron saint.

On Sept. 8, 1961, 30,000 exiled Cubans crowded Miami Stadium to attend their first celebration outside of Cuba to honor the nation's patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre.

The parishioners were in for a great surprise -- the arrival, on that same day, of a famous image of the patron saint from their homeland.

``This symbol helped them relive their motherland's history with all its joys and sorrows,'' said Monsignor Agustín Román, chaplain emeritus of the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity, also known as Ermita de la Caridad in Miami. ``The exiled community received the sign of love that would unite them in the future.''

JUBILEE PLANS

A novena to the Virgin -- nine consecutive days of prayer -- begins Monday, culminating with the start of yearlong festivities to honor that 1961 event. It will be celebrated during the 2011-2012 Jubilee Year, when many Cubans everywhere will celebrate four centuries of the Virgin's first apparition in Cuba's northeast seas.

The parish, which has 57,000 members, plans an active program of evangelization during the year with the goal of reaching every believer.

The program is called ``Family Night'' and aims to unite families in prayer and joy.

``Since charity is love, the parish wants to begin waking up love within the family,'' said Román, 82. ``In the current environment, families do not have the time to communicate or know each other; they are strangers living in the same house.''

In this fraternal spirit, the Jubilee Year will be celebrated in Miami from Sept. 8, 2011, to Sept. 8, 2012.

After the apparition of the image in the 17th century, faith in the Virgin spread rapidly throughout the island, even though communication then was very limited. In 1916, Pope Benedict XV proclaimed Cuba's patron saint in response to the request of hundreds of veterans who had fought for the country's independence.

With the Virgin's arrival to the exile community, devotions to the saint began to increase among the parishioners of the Archdiocese of Miami, under the sponsorship then of Archbishop Coleman Carroll. That eventually led to the construction of the Ermita, a national sanctuary next to Biscayne Bay that attracts a half-million faithful every year.

GOSPEL SINGER

Iraida Yocham-Añorga, a Cuban gospel singer, attended the Sunday evening Mass at the Ermita, which has a majestic mural of the Virgin's image, together with Cuba's patriotic symbols, Cuban historic heroes and remembrances of the island's geography.

She was expected to sing and register for the novena, which will end at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 with the Festivity of the Virgin at the BankUnited Center at the University of Miami.

``The Virgin's image is a Cuban symbol of the motherland, which helps us unite us to our people in intercession before God,'' Yocham-Añorga, 66, one of the organizers of the vigil, said before the festivity. The ceremony will include a serenade of songs and poetry.

Following tradition, the event will end at midnight with the entrance of mariachis singing to the saint.

On October 11, 1954, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of the Queenship of Mary to be celebrated throughout the world, and commanded that on that day each year, the world should renew its consecration to her. The feast is celebrated on August 22nd.

Chicago's Cardinal Francis George arrived by private plane in Cuba on Wednesday to meet with local Roman Catholic parishioners and pray at a shrine for the island nation's patron saint.

Archbishop Dionisio Garcia Ibanez of Santiago, Cuba, invited George to his archdiocese after a visit to Chicago last year for a film premiere that raised money for humanitarian work in Chicago and Cuba.

George's trip will include a Mass at the Santiago cathedral and a visit to the national shrine of Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre. Catholic Cubans in Chicago celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Charity on Sept. 8, with Mass at St. Ita in Chicago, St. Lambert in Skokie and Sacred Heart in Melrose Park.

AdvertisementColleen Dolan, communications director for the Chicago archdiocese, said the timing of the cardinal's visit had nothing to do with a recent five-day meeting in Havana between President Raul Castro and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, the Vatican's foreign minister.

The purpose of the visit is "not an analysis for the government life of the area," Dolan said. "He's interested in church life. There is a Catholic church in Cuba. That's what he's going to see."

But in recent months, Catholic bishops have had a number of successful negotiations with the Cuban government. Mamberti, for example, did not meet with dissidents during his visit. And shortly after a meeting between Cuba's Cardinal Jaime Ortega and Castro, Cuba transferred about a dozen political prisoners closer to their families.

Miguel De La Torre, professor of social ethics at Iliff School of Theology in Denver who specializes in Cuban religion and politics, said George's 24-hour pastoral visit could carry long-term significance.

"It is up to the religious leaders to begin to deal with the Judeo-Christian issue of reconciliation," De La Torre said. "One of the problems I have with the U.S. embargo of Cuba is it prevents U.S. citizens from mingling and talking to Cuban citizens. The quickest way to begin to melt this animosity is for the people to begin to talk to each other, and hopefully the government will be able to catch up."

Browsing through Sr. CONNECTION, I found the Sanfilippo Estate, once again, on the front page, for the Victorian Palace in 2010 XXI. Have you ever visited a Victorian Palace in the 21st century? Look for the European Salon Carousel and the Tiffany Dome at the Victorian mansion with crystal chandeliers in Barrington Hills, Illinois USA.

Seven years ago, the Italian American Chamber of Commerce Midwest and the French American Chamber of Commerce Midwest invited joint members with the Groupe Professionel Francophone for a Sunday afteroon soirée at the Victorian Palace for the Sanfilippo Estate Plum Tree Farm in Barrington Hills. All guests were personally greeted by Jasper Sanfillippo and his wife. We were treated to a special tour of the Victorian Palace at the Sanfilippo Estate, valet parking, hors d’oeuvres, beverages, refreshments, good-hearted hospitality and a warm personal welcome from Jasper Sanfililippo and his wife at the Plum Tree Farm in Barrington Hills.

Everyone was dazed and amazed at the objet d’art and wonderful memorabilia displayed at the Victorian Palace.

I remembered the beautiful antique organ played by classical organist Frank Pugno who entertained the guests all afternoon at the Grand Salon. During his performance, I interviewed Ray Pugno, who was kind to share his impressions with me during the visit to the Victorian Palace. I filmed a Digital Video for San Filippo Plum Tree Farm, Barrington Hills, Illinois, English in color, 2H30, 2000 for Communications, Languages & Culture, Inc.

Now on May 22, 2010, Catholic Charities is sponsoring another dinner event at the Sanfilippo Estate. Hearts for the Homeless in the Eighth Wonder of the World Tour is making a public effort to raise funds for homeless families in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. This fundraising dinner and auction offer unique auction items which include a yacht cruise, a TV news station tour and talk time with Garry Meier, WGN Radio personality, to benefit Catholic Charities Northwest Regional Services and the New Hope Apartments Program, a supportive housing initiatives program intended to help end the cycle of homelessness for local families.

The Sanfilippo Estate reminds us of Victorian Times (1837-1901), when young Victoria became Queen of Britain at age 18, on June 1837, and many changes took place along with her reign until 1901. Queen Victoria defined her time, trends, fashions, mores, world exploration, navigation, progress, thought, and places, as a turning point in the history of Europe and the world. The 19th century is also known as Victorian Times; in turn, these gave way to the Industrial Revolution. Victorian times marked a transition point between the old and the new modern era in Europe and the Americas, driven by new thoughts, ideas, and man-made machines during the 20th century.

The Victorian Palace is a private residence displaying treasured antiques which include the world’s renown theatre organs with 8,000 pipes, the 1881 Grant Steam Locomotive, featuring the 1890 European Eden Palais Carousel at the Sanfilippo Estate; Victorian memorabilia, antique music, arcade, gambling machines; original Comfort Tiffany lamps and dome; an old-fashioned ice cream parlor; 200 gramaphones used as mechanical music boxes; phonographs; 64 coin-operated pianos; automated violins; and a street clock standing 20 feet tall.

In the 21st century, the Victorian Palace is still drawing attention and recollections when we remember things from past centuries at the Sanfilippo Estate in Barrington Hills, Illinois USA.

A Franciscan Prayer on National Prayer Day

The Prayer of Saint Francis is a Christian prayer. It is attributed to the 13th-century saint Francis of Assisi, although the prayer in its present form cannot be traced back further than 1912, when it was printed in France in French, in a small spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell) as an anonymous prayer, as demonstrated by Dr Christian Renoux in 2001. The prayer has been known in the United States since 1936 and Cardinal Francis Spellman and Senator Hawkes distributed millions of copies of the prayer during and just after World War II.[1]

"This Easter day is a great day of joy and glory.
I love Jesus in this luminous glory, and how I love his Mother too. All the bells were decorated with flowers, there was great happiness. It was a day of love, the day when everything was done according to God’s wishes. The entire earth was united.
She said to me: 'May this feast of Easter bring joy to my children. Tell them that I do not forget them, that I wait for them to come before me. Tell them that if they ask me, I will always come to help them.' She asks her children on earth to love her divine Son, console his Heart and cease to persecute him.

In a renewed spirit of cooperation, the Basilica of Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre in Santiago de Cuba and the Holy See Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican in Rome, Italy, celebrate their octogenarian anniversary with Cuban officials, Fidel Castro in 2007, the world, Christians, Catholic pilgrims, and visitors alike who have visited and worshipped this religious shrine near Santiago de Cuba for centuries, at El Cobre, in Cuba.

The Holy See at the Vatican in Rome, Italy has always been interested in Cuba as a Catholic, Roman, and Apostolic country of faithful Christians, Catholics, and good people, protected by the Vatican throughout the ages in the Americas, since 1492, when Christopher Columbus discovered Cuba, commissioned by Spain’s Royal Family, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, of the Kingdom of Aragón and Castilla, in Spain and Europe. Since 1902, from the balcony of the Cathedral in Santiago de Cuba, displays flags from the Vatican and Cuba for the first time.

Throughout the ages, “Christians friends believe that there is no need for dogma, liturgy or sacraments, since the inner light of Christ shines in the heart of every man and woman. Historical Reference

The Basilica of Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre was built in Palma Soriano, near Santiago de Cuba, commissioned for construction by Pope Pius XI, following the honorary visit of the Holy See Pope Benedict XV in 1916, when His Holiness declared Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre, Sovereign Patroness Saint of Cuba. Cuban architect Félix Cabarrocas designed the new Catholic church in an architectural style reminiscent of the Revival of the Spanish Neocolonial movement, the same as the Catholic Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen in La Habana, Cuba. Concurrently, in 1916, the same year of Pope Benedict XV’s visit, Mr. Woodrow Wilson was re-elected as President of the United States of America.

During the 20th century, the U.S.A. hosted the Exposition California-Pacific for Religious Architecture in San Diego, sponsored by Mr. Bertran Goodhue, a respected American architect for churches in the United States of America due to this architectural model pavilions which created momentum for the “revival of the Spanish Neocolonial Architectural movement” in North America, within the next two decades. Bertran Goodhue’s architectural design for the Episcopalian Cathedral of the Santísima Trinidad in La Habana (which no longer exists) was one of the very first models of the style in Cuba and boasted of having an ornate, decorated entry in the architectural style of Spanish “churrigueresque” design, which would be imitated later in the following buildings, including non-religious structures. At the time, the influence of the Episcopalian Church also arrived in Cuba from the United States and acquired a neutral, non-political stand. From the first historic military occupation of the United States in Cuba at the turn-of-the-century, the Episcopalian Church had a stronger presence in Cuban and the new architectural constructions by Episcopalian Protestant Christians reflected Cuban-U.S.A. connections clearly.

In addition, the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba is the fourth one built over the same foundation and reconstructed with a Neoclassical façade in 1922, during the term of Pope Pius XI, who succeeded Pope Benedict XV at the Holy See in Rome, Italy.

The Basilica of Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre was also honored by His Holiness Pope John Paul II, who made the historical pilgrimage in 1998 from the Vatican in Rome, and crowned the statue of the Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre at the Basilica Sanctuary during his memorable visit to Santiago de Cuba and El Cobre, in Palma Soriano, Cuba.

During the Spanish revival of religious architecture in Cuba, from 1898 through 195, “the Republican era of Cuban history”, the architectural model of the basilica imitated the building of St. Peter’s Basilica as documented and reported by author and writer R.A. Scotty in his publication, St. Peter’s Basilica, reconstructed in 1506 at the Vatican in Rome, Italy, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of this Roman religious relic in 2006.

The etymology of the world “basilica” in Latin comes from Ancient Greek “basilike”, (stoa), which literally means “royal hall (portico, court)” from “basileus”, “king”.

In architectural terms, a ‘basilica” is defined as an oblong building of Ancient Rome, Italy which has two rows of columns dividing the interior into a nave and two (2) side aisles, used as court or place of assembly. A basilica is a church or cathedral accorded certain ceremonial rights by the Pope. It is a Roman Catholic Apostolic Church with certain ceremonial privileges, like St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Holy See at the Vatican in Italy—erected in the year 330 Anno Domini and pulled down in the year of Our Lord 1506 to be reconstructed as the new cathedral known as St. Peter’s Basilica today by the many Christian, Catholic faithful pilgrims and parishioners who gather for Sunday mass services and gather during religious holidays. At Easter Sunday, last April 15th, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI held an outdoor gathering at the end of the Easter Sunday Mass for more than a million Christian Catholics and visitors at St. Peter’s Plaza in Rome to pray for peace during times of war and violence around the world.

Coincidentally, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated his 80th Anniversary birthday on Monday, April 16th, 2007, within the religious Easter holiday time.

The Vatican and Pope Benedict XVI both have expressed Christian Catholic interest, concern, and support for Cuba, its people as Cuban Roman Catholic and Apostolic faithful, and the Cuban churches who are devoted to their religious practices as Catholic Christians and worshipers of the faith. In 2005, the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre was blessed to receive a gift from Pope Benedict XVI, a new set of bells for the church bell tower on September 8th, 2005, the anniversary of the apparition of the Patroness Saint of Cuba, sponsored by the Salesian Missions Order of Rome at the Vatican in Italy.

For reference, “the same old bells which rung throughout the centuries used to call the copper miners and the faithful to worship at the Basilica of Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre, and a call to praise God, our Lord Jesus Christ, his Son, and the Holy Spirit”. These church bells have rung in proclamation of each new Pope, Bishops, Archbishops, and Cardinals of Santiago de Cuba during religious festivities and great national events heralding a new era of freedom, hope, and news, for instance, the historical world response to the proposal by the late British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and U.S. President Mr. Frank D. Roosevelt who wished to include the Vatican in peace agreements at the end of the Second World War.

On the 80th Anniversary of the building of the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre built in 1927, we must recall the apparition and the finding of the statue of the Virgin Mary and the Christ child at sea, in the Bay of Nipe, floating on Cuban waters, near El Cobre and Santiago de Cuba.

In the year 1608, the story relates how Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre was found as a statue floating on stormy waters near the Bay of Santiago de Cuba by Los Cayos when the brothers Rodrigo and Juan de Hoyos, along with a 10-year-old slave boy, Juan Moreno, returned from collecting sea salt to preserve meat fro the residents of Santiago del Prado, known today as El Cobre, near Palma Soriano and Santiago de Cuba. These (3) three seafarers in Cuban waters rowed their wooden boat safely back to land, in spite of the high tide of the waves and the strong gusts of wind blowing through the Windward Passage along the Greater Antilles, on their return to Santiago del Prado.

The mining town of El Cobre was founded in the 16th century, 1550 Anno Domini, as Santiago del Prado, established by Spaniards and inhabited by native Caribbean Indians, also known as “Ciboneyes and Caribes”, as well as slaves. According to anecdotes and oral history narratives, one day in the year 1608, Juan and Rodrigo de Hoyos, two native Caribbean Indians, and Juan Moreno, a slave boy, found a small statue of the Virgin Mary carrying the Christ Child in her right arm and a gold cross in her left arm, wrapped in swaddling clothes, not wet by the storm over the waves at the Bay of Nipe in Cuban waters. The statue of the Virgin Mary and Child was floating on a wooden plank bearing the inscription, “I am the Virgin of Charity”—in Spanish, “Yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad”.

If 1608 A.D. were the year that Our Lady of Charity, Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre appeared, then in 2008 would be the 400th Anniversary of the apparition in Cuban waters and a tribute to the wonders of her miraculous works documented as votes of faith at the Basilica Sanctuary of El Cobre in Palma Soriano, Cuba. Visitors mention that the Mother of Mr. Fidel Castro and Mr. Raúl Castro left a small golden guerrilla fighter at the feet of the Virgin as her sons battled the government of Fulgencio Batista ahead of the Cuban Revolution…

In the 17th century, the original church at El Cobre was dedicated to Santiago de Compostela, also known as St. James, one of the twelve apostles who preached the gospel in Spain, region of Galicia, and who is honored as a patron saint on July 25th annually. During the Middle Ages, St. James, also known as Santiago in Spanish, was the patron saint of pilgrims and the Knights of the Crusades. St. James was the powerful saint of the Spanish Conquest. So, the statue of the Virgin Mary and Child was placed in a thatched hut, like a stable, instead of in the church. But, on three (3) successive nights, the statue of the Virgin Mary and Child, Our Lady of Charity disappeared from the hut and was found on top of the hill above El Cobre in Cuba.

The Virgin of Charity and the Christ Child resided in several small shrines until 1630, when the copper mine at Santiago del Prado, in El Cobre was closed down and the slaves were freed. Then Our Lady, Virgin of Charity and the Christ Child took St. James’ place above the high altar in the church, a symbol of the triumph of the Cuban people over the Spanish conquerors. In 1731, when an attempt was made to reintroduce slavery, Our Lady of Charity, Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre became a symbol of emancipation for one of Cuba’s largest slave insurrections. In the end, the slaves were declared to be free. This action for freedom spread devotion further to Our Lady, Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Virgin of Charity.

On the first day of the month of April in the year one thousand six hundred and eight-seven (1687), Juan Moreno at the age of 85 years reported this narrative in oral history as a notarized sworn statement, certified by ecclesiastical officials and archived for the record at the Archivo de Indias, Legajo 363, in Seville, Spain. Now in the 21st century and on the 80th Anniversary, both the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre and His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI have transcended historic differences, social, political, and religious changes as travelers through time, space, physical presence, and beyond, much like author H.G. Wells did through his classic masterpiece, The Time Machine, with “Zeitgeist”, in the spirit of the times…and beyond… We celebrate their success!

In the same way, for the 21st century, both people from Cuba and Florida in the U.S.A. can transcend socio-political and historic differences, and be united by their religion, beliefs, and Christian votes of faith to the Roman Catholic and Apostolic church represented by the Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady Virgin de la Caridad del Cobre in Cuba and the Holy See Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican in Rome, Italy, and at the Shrine, Ermita de la Caridad del Cobre in Miami, Florida, United States of America.

In the spirit of the times, the “historical dialectics in Cuba-U.S.A. politics” can be addressed by including the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI in Rome, as well as the Christian faith of Cuban leaders Mr. Fidel Castro and Mr. Raúl Castro, the Cuban people’s faith in God and Our Lady of Charity at El Cobre, and U.S. President Mr. George W. Vatican City.- Pope Benedict XVI has written a special prayer for Chinese Catholics who face "daily trials" in the officially atheistic country, the Vatican said Friday. The prayer will be uttered around the world on May 24, 2008, on the day that the pope has dedicated to praying for the Chinese church, which has long had a difficult relationship with the country's authorities. The prayer--released in Chinese and six other languages--invokes the protection of the Virgin Mary and prominently mentions a shrine dedicated to her at Sheshan, in suburban Shanghai. Chinese authorities have tried to restrict access to the shrine during this year's annual May pilgrimages. "Our Lady of Sheshan, sustain all those in China, who amid their daily trials, continue to believe, to hope, to love. May they never be afraid to speak of Jesus to the world, and of the world to Jesus," the prayer says.

I have good news to share during the month of March 2008. While walking in the Chicago Downtown area, I found a bright, gold medal with the image of Our Lady Mary Immaculate Queen, to whom I pray the Holy Rosary, with my Mother, Mrs. Gardenia Fong Ramos, and the Ladies of the Rosary at St. Pius X Catholic Church and at the Shrine of Our Lady Mary Immaculate Queen in Lombard, Du Page County, Illinois, USA. The gold medal engraving reads: "O Mary, conceived without sin, Pray For Us Who Have Recourse to Thee". On the back this gold medal has the insignia for Immaculate Mary and the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus and a Cross.
